From grtdane at internode.on.net Fri Feb 3 11:30:09 2012 From: grtdane at internode.on.net (Dane Trethowan) Date: Fri, 3 Feb 2012 22:30:09 +1100 Subject: "Playsaway" Books Message-ID: Hi Again! This idea had to come, was wondering how long it would take. I received my latest delivery of audio books from my local library and noticed a rather unusual package, something similar to a DVD case. Upon opening this I discovered a small box of around 2 inches square consisting of several buttons on the front, a headphones socket and a lanyard for carrying around the neck, this is a "Playsaway" book and you buy them as is, that is to say when you buy the book you buy the machine with the book already programmed into it which makes a whole heap of sense. CD'S are easily damaged for one thing, if you want my personal opinion I think they're not as durable for books as cassette tapes were but then again, cassette tape had its own problems as many of us know. The buttons on the machine are incredibly straight forward, a power button, volume up/down buttons, fast forward and rewind buttons and an EQ button, more than enough to control your book listening. I was pleasantly surprised when I pressed the fast forward button to go to the next track when I heard the number of the track announced, very handy when skimming through the book trying to find a location or the last chapter where you were. I don't have a web site for these books but I'm sure you'll find them if you ask your friend Google. Given the development of these books I have to wonder what the future of Daisy audio publications may hold? Here, we more or less went from cassettes to downloads and USB cartridges over night. The lending libraries in the US as part of the national Library of Congress Talking Book program all distribute pretty much the same media all over the country. Recorded books come on either 4-track cassettes, digital Daisy books on cartridge or many of the same books on a secure web site that let readers download them free of charge to place on a thumb drive that plugs in to the same player as the Daisy cartridges. The Playsaway books sound like a clever idea for the sort of thing you might hand a visiter to a museum, but I think they would be kind of expensive on a large scale and then you have the battery charging issue and buttons that eventually wear out making the whole device useless. Do you buy them to keep or does your lending library want them back after a time? Can your library reload the device with a new book later? I think about these things because I used to work in a section of our state's lending library back in the seventies. We provided tapes in open-reel and cassette form, Talking Book Phonograph records and special FM sub carrier radio receivers . We used and reused anything we could as, like many state agencies, we had to be frugal. Our Nickel or 5-cent coin has a picture of a buffalo on one side and the saying is when someone is saving money that he could squeeze a Nickel until the buffalo hollered. That was us, all right so I always liked to see technology used to its fullest. I take your point about the buttons on the "Playsaway" devices, they're of a rubber membrane type so yep, they will wear out very quickly indeed! I wonder when manufacturers will stop using this rubbish. I got the "Playsaway" book from my local public library and it will be great for them, they only have to send the books out or put them on the shelf for their members to choose and borrow, no more scratched CD'S, stretched tapes and so on. I found the "Playsaway" web site and they're obviously well versed on the subject of talking books, looking at the site I discovered that they have programmes established for schools, library's and other institutions. On checking with my local library I discovered that they already have over 500 "Playsaway" titles on their shelves ready to roll. They'll stop when somebody comes out with something better and cheaper. That's what drives technology advancement. Nobody deliberately builds cheap rubbish, but the business of manufacturing is cut-throat and the game is to build your gadget cheaper than anybody else can make theirs. We could make things with modular buttons that you could pop out and replace when one went bad, but that might double the price of the device in question and many people just look at the price tag and don't really care so the beautiful calculator or sound recorder with the user-replaceable buttons doesn't sell while the one that is barely holding together and half as much sells like hot cakes. Traditional buttons are hard to keep going because they contain moving parts and springs or rubber pads and these things wear out. A lot of times now, a button is a piece of rubber with metallic paint on the bottom or maybe foam plastic impregnated with carbon to make it conductive. Under that is the circuit board with a couple of conductive traces sitting under the button so that they bridge or short together when you push the rubber down against the circuit board pads. That's about as cheap as it gets and any rough treatment or deterioration over time will make it fail. The iphone and other touch screen devices are the next wave of technology because the buttons have no moving parts. You just change the value of a capacitor when your finger presses against the screen and those should last a very long time. I've even seen buttons that have a light source in them and a photo cell and work when the button is pressed such that it blocks the light between the source and the detector. Those buttons should last as many years as the spring and other mechanical parts last, but they probably cost twenty times what one of those rubber buttons does. From martin at x.it.okstate.edu Fri Feb 3 17:48:14 2012 From: martin at x.it.okstate.edu (Martin McCormick) Date: Fri, 03 Feb 2012 11:48:14 -0600 Subject: Ultimate Buttons Message-ID: <201202031748.q13HmEHH011810@x.it.okstate.edu> Some of you might enjoy this description of the other extreme of manufacturing in which cost is no object. I went to a shop in Oklahoma City years ago that sold various new and surplus electronic devices. One device that caught my attention was something that looked like a typewriter keyboard and bore the legend "Field Data Keyboard." It was military surplus gear of some kind and I probably only payed a few Dollars for it, but it looked interesting to play with. When I took it apart, I realized that it must have cost a small fortune when it was new because the whole keyboard worked on light beams. On the right end of the keyboard was a metal block containing light bulbs that produced 6 or 8 beams that shown the whole length of the keyboard in to 6 or 8 photo cells at the left end. When you pushed a key, that key caused a metal bar to drop down and block some of the beams of light. There were notches cut in to the bars so that each key blocked different beams when pressed and each bar had a shallower notch at each end so that a machine could tell when the key was fully down. In other words, there were no contacts to get dirty or break. The only moving parts were the metal bars and the springs to return them to up when you released the key. There was even a solenoid with a locking bar that could be tripped to prevent any key from being pressed and lock the whole keyboard. I don't know what this came off of, but I can imagine it was probably several hundred or more US Dollars and what it hooked to was probably unimaginably expensive. It most likely came from the 1960's or 1970's and may have controlled radar or similar systems. I still have it somewhere and it is an interesting thing to show somebody, but me thinks it's time of usefulness has passed. It is an interesting testimony to what can be done when cost is not a factor. I've seen some manufacturers of devices tackle this problem by putting plastic covers over the keys for example but not all do it, as you say, these extra touches cost money thus add to the bottom line. Is anyone using an Apple TV together with iCloud to purchase TV shows? I tried it for the first time last week and it works a treat, sound quality is superb and I'm told that picture quality is excellent too! All the TV shows you purchase are stored in the iCloud so when you watch them from your Apple TV the device is affectively streaming the content over the Internet from the Cloud. So far so good but how do you get iTunes on your computer or your iPhone/iPad to recognise the purchases you've made? Had some spare pocket money so thought it about time I purchased Abbey Fine Reader Express from the Mac "App Store" and see what I could make of it. I've only been playing with the software for an hour or so and the software seems one of those applications that's easy to get into on the surface yet has much to explore beneath. Unfortunately at this time I cannot get Fine Reader Express to talk to my HP 8500APlus multi function device and I'm stuck with this problem for the moment. Perhaps Fine Reader Express doesn't recognise scanning devices connected to a LAN? I looked for a "Preference" pane in the software thinking that perhaps this may help me, I can see the "Preferences" option in the "Fine Reader" menu but the option is greyed out for some reason. Okay, so that initial disappointment over and done with I figured that I could at least do some OCR work on a PDF file and as it happens I needed to convert a PDF to text quickly, still configuring my new Billion Router and a text version of the manual would be of great benefit . I was somewhat bemused at the time Abbey Fine Reader Express took to run an OCR conversion on the file, tok over an hour to convert a file containing more than 120 pages, perhaps I'm expecting far too much? Well I don't think so really, on my Windows PC K1000 would have taken a third of the time to do the job and of that I'm 100% sure. After the conversion was complete Fine Reader Express prompted me to save the changes, I chose to save the document in RTF format, you can choose to have the document opened I assume by the application associated with the RTF format which in this case was Text Edit. Document was perfectly readable though for some reason the format of the tables wasn't too accurate, not necessarily blaming Fine reader Express for that as text Edit may have decided to do some fiddling itself and that's where a piece of software such as K1000 - which is deliberately designed for the blind user from the ground up - comes into its own, tables and the like are formatted as closely as is possible to mimic the original printed document and you can view tables and document within the K1000 software thus. This isn't a criticism of Fine Reader Express as this software was never intended nor designed with the use of blind people in mind, for those with vision they will find an array of tools to correct formatting, accuracy, spelling and the like from within Fine Reader Express which is perfectly acceptable for the day-to-day business of scanning documents and converting same into electronic text files, Word Processor documents, Spreadsheets, email, searchable PDF documents amongst a host of other formats. Yes, Fine Reader Express is certainly worth the $109.00 Australian I paid for the app, it will take a little time to get going properly however if you're blind, you have a Windows PC, you want very accurate results quickly from your OCR work and you have the money then I'd certainly recommend K1000 over everything I've tried thus far including Fine Reader Express. The radio records in MP3 format and the bit rate can be toggled between 64-128K though I would suggest that if your recording AM broadcasts then this setting won't make all that much difference . the radio is AM/FM and has the excellent sensitivity and selectivity traits well known to users of Sangean radio equipment. The radio boasts some really nice and convenient features so here's a few to wet your appetite. ? Record timer ? Sleep timer with wake up alarm to buzzer or radio and snooze function ? built-in microphone for voice recordings ? Line-in jack for connection of a CD player etc, recording can be made from the lin-in jack ? Playback of MP3/WMA encoded files. ? Handles SD cards up to 64GB in testing. ?Capable of supporting various battery types including Alkaline and Rechargeables, radio contains built-in charger. Now it would seem that these radio sets are hard to get and they're certainly not imported into Australia as far as I know, I had to order mine from the U.S. and it appears that the PDR8 is a discontinued model which is a shame. In other words if you're good at following instructions then you'll have no problem setting the clock, record timer or the Alarm. The "Sleep Timer" is a bit of a problem as you have to hold down the power button to adjust it thus you need to read the display to see what time is showing for the timer before releasing the button. I plan to rewrite the manual into something which is English rather than Picglish . Looking to buy a new router that does.. well.. pretty muh everything accept make your cup of coffee? Take a look at the review of the Fritzbox 7390 at http://www.cnet.com.au/avm-fritzbox-7390-339313956.htm I purchased one of these earlier this week and I'm still marvelling at the rich set of features and functions this clever box offers the user. I bought 2 cordless handsets with my box and I also have a standard analogue desktop office phone connected to the box. Anyway read the review and see what you think, I'd be interested in other comments. I'm also pleased to say that the Fritzbox has the most accessible HTML interface of any router that I've ever worked with, I've worked with routers from Billion, Open Networks and Linksys in the main. I am considering buying a TP-Link TL-WR841N wireless router but am not clear on whether this is intended to connect to an SDSL telephone broadband service (which is the service of interest) or to connect to a cable service such as Virgin Media in the UK. I have looked at the TP-Link web site but am not sufficiently familiar with the jargon to be able to answer the above question. I am suspicious because the router is listed by Amazon as a cable router which makes me think it is for use with Virgin Media or the like. So are there different types of router for the different types of broadband or does it make no difference? Many thanks. Just another note on this subject for those who may be interested - at least one list member I'm sure! . I forgot to mention some of the layout of the set in previous email on this thread, one interesting feature is the "Antenna" socket which works for both FM and AM bands, not something found on every portable radio these days . The selectivity and sensitivity of the set is good however given the fact that the radio records on to SD cards? Well a certain amount of interference is to be expected, in my experience it isn't much but on some frequencies its there. I connected the set to my CC Twin Coil Tuneable aerial just now and the difference is amazing, certainly the tuneable aerial was worth every bit of the $100.00 purchase price I paid from CCrane. One of the most vexing problems to a lot of those users of cordless phones and associated equipment would seem to be the total inaccessibility of some functions which one may have to depend upon in an emergency, a case in point here is the Phone book of a cordless phone system where the user has to read the screen in order to find the number in the phone book. Its also the case that the user has to be able to read the screen in order to add a full entry to the phone book. Have I totally solved this problem? Well no, not yet but I?ve made some good progress, at least I?ve found a way of adding phone numbers to the phone book of my cordless phone system and I can easily define 2 or 3 digit codes for the keypad of the phone so calls to the defined numbers can be made quickly and easily in the event of an emergency situation. I wrote briefly about the Fritzbox router last week, as well as being a router this device is a cordless phone base station so I bought 2 additional handsets with the box. The Box has been full thus far of many pleasant surprises in the amount of configurable features and functions, amongst which is the ability to view all incoming, missed and outgoing calls via a very accessible HTML interface. Once you?re in the ?Call list? table, you can choose to ?Add Entries? to your phone book thus assigning the incoming, outgoing or missed number a name, email address and so on to the phone book. Likewise you can go directly to the phone book and add/edit to your hearts desire adding specific ?Speed Dial? codes - for want of a better description - along the way. You can have multiple phone books if that?s what you require, say one phone book for every handset you have, ideal! for family situations. The base station supports up to 6 handsets. DECT compatible handsets can be used with the Fritzbox but the manual does warn that not all features may be available. So you don?t have a cordless phone? Not to worry, the Fritzbox can support 2 telephones so you don?t even have to buy a new phone to have access to the features I?ve described above though more features are available to you if you have the compatible cordless handsets. For example, the user can define Podcasts or Radio stations to play over the handset, define ringer tones both from a preset list or add personal favourites, ringer volumes and so on. I?m still learning about the Fritzbox and the cordless handsets, I?ve never seen so many features and functions crammed into such a small unit. And yep, ?Hands Free Speakerphone? on the Fritz handsets is about the best I?ve heard, very little background noise, full duplex and extremely good clarity, even better clarity is achieved when you?re making direct VOIP calls over the Internet. Sorry to bring up the subject of the Sangean PDR8 radio recorder again, unfortunately I was given some incorrect information which I sent to this list so therefor I need to correct it. I spoke of the Sangean PDR8 having an "External Antenna" socket, this is not true. The 4 sockets in order are headphones, line-out, line-in and the power socket, the power socket is immediately identifiable by the ring around it. This ring lights up when power is applied to the radio and - if you're using rechargeable batteries - the light changes colour according to the charging condition of the batteries, flashes when charging is in progress etc. From grtdane at internode.on.net Wed Feb 29 23:31:28 2012 From: grtdane at internode.on.net (Dane Trethowan) Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2012 10:31:28 +1100 Subject: Accessible MP3 Player Message-ID: <9BFF00A5-788B-4340-92F9-594DD09D7215@internode.on.net> Hi! ever dreamed of having a MP3 player the size of a netbook with built-in speakers? Look at Even better! this device doesn't have a screen so its perfect! for those who don't have vision and the price makes it worth the buy. Has internal rechargeable battery which you charge from your computers USB port. Takes either SD Card or USB stick and has a line-in for those devices such as radio sets or talking book players which have line-out. $40.00 for the player which makes it an absolute bargain. And finally just in case some of you are living at the bottom of a pond, under a rock or some place similar , I did say this player was a MP3 player, it does not as far as I know support MP4 files and certainly does not support daisy.
